One way a charitable organization raises awareness for its cause is through the use of ambassadors. Charitable ambassadors are people, many of some renown, who lend their name, time and support to the mission of charities. Some of the activities ambassadors partake in include public speaking, hosting or attending fund-raising galas, and walking the runways in charity fashion shows. Use a few tips to become a charitable ambassador.

Show a commitment to service. Volunteer for a single or various organizations in your community to see if you have a passion for advocating for a cause. If you are unable to volunteer on a weekly or biweekly basis, look into participating in short volunteer opportunities such as charity walks, bicycle rides, recycling and food drives. Or, consider volunteering for highly visible events, such as when the horses swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. Keep a file of letters or acknowledgements from organizers to document your service.

Become a celebrity. Many charitable organizations seek celebrities to serve as ambassadors because of the public and media attention they attract. This may seem like an unattainable goal for most, there are ways to pique the interest of a charity. Local celebrities a charity might be interested in working with include authors, college athletes, beauty queens, disc jockeys and models.

Have enough time available to commit to a charity. Many charities ask that an ambassador commit to at least one year of service. For a local charity, your responsibilities may include speaking at schools, hosting galas and appearing on local television and radio programs. Make sure you can arrange time off from work to fulfill these obligations before approaching a charity.

Save or raise money to donate to a cause. There are charities that ask ambassadors to donate not only their time but money as well. Donation requirements may be nominal on up to thousands of dollars. Generally, the higher the donation, the more event invitations an ambassador receives.

Apply for an ambassadorship with the charity of your choice. Many charities have a need for ambassadors ranging from those who advocate for buying new library books to those that are concerned with Assateague horses. Search online for charities that support the cause you are most passionate about. If you meet the requirements to become an ambassador, fill out the application and wait for a reply from the charity. If the charitable organization does not have an application on its website, consider contacting them by phone or email to express your volunteering interest.
