Scientists crack age-old egg problem

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

Scientists in the UK have developed a new way to ensure boiled eggs are perfectly cooked thanks to a brand new hi-tech logo being printed on shells.

After cooking starts, people will be able to see if their egg is soft, medium or hard-boiled with the help of a thermochromic print which appears in black ink on the egg’s shell.

The eggs will be sold to consumers in the UK within the next few months. A spokeswoman for Lion Quality, the assurance scheme which came up with the idea, said: “We had a lot of inquiries from people which sparked an interest in the industry. We said OK, this is a big issue – people can’t even boil an egg.”

Gilly Beaumont, from B&H Colour Change, the company which created the logos, said: “We are still perfecting the technology, but we are very excited at the prospect of sorting a problem that has wound people up at breakfast time for decades.”

The most successful way to cook an egg has baffled some of the greatest chefs in the past. In 1998, Delia Smith dedicated a whole episode of her How To Cook programme on the best way to boil an egg. And last year, a survey carried out by the magazine Waitrose Food Limited showed five top chefs all had different techniques.

Air Pacific re-brands as Fiji Airways

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Fiji’s national airline Air Pacific has now officially returned to its original name: Fiji Airways. Fiji Airways adopted the Air Pacific name in 1971, slightly prior to its first international flight on June 3, 1973. The re-brand was described by interim CEO Aubrey Swift as allowing the airline to align itself “closer with Fiji as a destination”. The name change is designed in part to reduce the confusion which surrounded the name Air Pacific. Swift noted that “Air Pacific just didn’t resonate with our customers” and said that same people “thought we were an air conditioning company”.

Along with the name change, the airline has redesigned its website, and changed the name of each of its classes of service. Pacific Voyager and Tabua Class have been replaced with economy and business class respectively. The airline has also introduced plans to overhaul its fleet of older Boeing 747s with Airbus A330s. It has said that the completion of this overhaul and the re-branding efforts will be completed by the end of the year.

The airline’s new brand-mark and livery features a masi design created by Fijian artist, Makereta Matemosi. The new identity is to “symbolises the airline’s new identity and epitomises all that Fiji Airways represents. It is authentic, distinctive, and true to the airline’s Fijian roots”, the airline said.

Japan hit by earthquake off coast of Fukushima

Thursday, March 17, 2022

At 23:36 JST (14:36 UTC) on Wednesday, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the moment magnitude scale struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

A Shinkansen train was derailed but no resulting injuries were reported, according to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Elsewhere, injured people were taken to hospital in S?ma for treatment, where local media reported one man had died.

Power outages were temporarily seen as far away as Tokyo, where an estimated 700 thousand people lost electricity before the Tokyo Electric Power Company reported power had been restored.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said a small tsunami was seen at the coast of Miyagi Prefecture approximately one hour after the tremor. The agency has issued a tsunami advisory, warning of water up to 1 meters (3.3 ft) above normal tidal levels. People were urged to stay away from the coast until the end of the advisory.

The earthquake’s epicenter was near that of the far more powerful 2011 T?hoku earthquake which triggered a large tsunami and a nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Kishida said “no abnormalities” had been reported at any nuclear facility after the current event.

How Sports Trading Pins Are Awarded

How Sports Trading Pins Are Awarded

by

Brett Woodson

A number of trading pins are awarded for a variety of reasons in different sports. For example, in football and baseball athletes and teams sometimes can win trading pins for winning championships and tournaments. In soccer and hockey, certain pins are awarded for winning regional competitions and national events that lead to international competitions like the World Cup. By understanding how some of these pins are awarded, collectors are able to determine the overall collectible value of certain pins as they build their collections of sports trading pins.

Awarding of Sports Trading Pins in High School Sports In high school sports, trading pins and other awards are awarded for a variety of reasons. Most often trading pins are awarded as a means of enhancing a sports team’s spirit of teamwork and are given to athletes at the end of a season as a way to reward players for participating in as many games as possible during the season. Some customized pins may be awarded to athletes who are on teams that win at county, district, regional, and state competitions. These pins are usually very colorful and are of great value to collectors of localized sports memorabilia. All in all, the criteria for the awarding of high school sports trading pins is often up to the discretion of a team’s coach and the athletic director of the high school program. Awarding of Sports Trading Pins in Collegiate Sports Programs Collegiate sports trading pins are some of the most sought after pins by athletes and collectors. These pins are usually awarded in a similar fashion to the way that high school pins are awarded with the exception that college-level pins are awarded on a more stringent basis. College-level sports pins are only awarded to the best performing players, whereas high school sports trading pins are usually awarded to all of the team’s players. That said, there are a few exceptions to this rule in the case of trading pins that are awarded for bowl games in football and the College World Series in baseball. In these events, just about every player on the team receives a trading pin commemorating the event. On the whole though, college-level sports trading pins are considered quite a bit more valuable by athletes and collectors. To get a specific idea of how college-level sports trading pins are awarded, it is a good idea to look at a few of the most common trading pins awarded in collegiate baseball. One pin that is usually awarded to the pitching staff is a trading pin awarded for the pitcher to pitch the most number of games over the course of the season. Another trading pin that is highly coveted is the pin given to the player who hits the most home-runs over the season. Finally, a trading pin made from gold or silver is often given to the player who has been determined by the baseball team’s coaching staff to be the most valuable player by getting the largest number of opposing players out over the course of the season. As can be seen, college-level sports trading pins are usually only given to those players who have proven their value to the overall success of the team. This is one of the many reasons why these pins are highly sought after by collectors. Awarding of Olympic and Professional Sports Trading Pins An interesting fact about the awarding of Olympic and professional sports trading pins is that these pins were designed originally as a way to identify team members wherever they went when they were not participating in Olympic and professional sporting events. After World War II, companies started putting together a variety of sports trading pin designs in order to market sports memorabilia to professional and Olympic sports fans. As a result of this marketing push, fans began to receive more and more sports trading pins for professional and Olympic sporting events. This fact led to the development of the hobby of collecting sports trading pins. ‘ Today, sports trading pins are awarded to professional and Olympic athletes for many of the same reasons that they are awarded to athletes that participate in sports at a lower level. One will often find companies offering athletes and their fans professional and Olympic sports trading pins to mark a certain tournament like the Super Bowl or a historic Olympic event like the 2008 Olympics that were held in Beijing. All in all, Olympic and professional sports trading pins are some of the most commonly traded sports pins available to collectors. The value of professional and Olympic trading pins is determined usually by a collector’s desire to own a professional team’s particular pin or to have a pin that memorializes a specific historical event. On the whole, these pins range widely in value making them a challenge for collectors who may consider their collection of sports trading pins to be an investment. Therefore, it can be a good idea to use a collector’s buying guide when purchasing any type of sports trading pin that you may be unfamiliar with. Now that you have a better idea of how sports trading pins are awarded, you will be able to more easily determine the value of the pins that you are looking to collect. All in all, the hobby of collecting sports trading pins is an exciting and fascinating look at the wide world of sports.

Brazilian Medicine Council against Cuban privileges

Monday, February 14, 2005

The Brazilian Regional Council of Medicine has protested against a Ministry of Education decision to accept the diplomas of Cuban medical school graduates without subjecting them to a more rigorous evaluation process.

Under the Brazilian 44045 Edict of July 19, 1958, all students of Medicine, Brazilian or non-Brazilian, who studied in a foreign institution must undergo a strict evaluation before their professional registration is granted. The law aims to ensure that the physicians who graduated at foreign universities are properly prepared for and familiarized with the particular medical conditions of Brazil. Some diseases like malaria and dengue for example are very rare in some countries but are more common in Brazilian territory.

However the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) has come to an agreement with the Cuban government to allow medical students who studied in Cuba to go through a less rigorous examination. Furthermore the MEC wants to exempt the students from the Cuban Escola Latino Americana de Medicina (Latin American Medicine School) or ELAM located in Havana from the examination. Under the agreement, the diplomas of ELAM students would be automatically recognized as valid in Brazil. The Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed the endorsement of this agreement last year during his visit to Cuba.

The Brazilian Regional Council of Medicine from São Paulo is opposed to the idea of accepting the Cuban diplomas and is to dispute the deal in Court. The council says the government decision is unfair and disadvantages Brazilian students. It also says that the decision puts the Brazilian community at risk because of differences between Cuban and Brazilian medical education. Cuban physicians are prepared for Cuban conditions and necessities in health which differ from Brazilian ones. Additionally the council argues that the decision is against the law because the Brazilian 44045 Edict demands that all medical students from foreign schools have to pass a careful examination.

The Cuban First Secretary of Technical and Scientific Collaboration in Health, Filisberto Perez, recognizes that both Brazil and Cuba have different models of apprenticeship in medicine. However he believes that Cuba and Brazil can recognize each other’s diplomas without difficulty.

Early this year, a team of Brazilian inspectors visited the leading medical schools in Cuba to evaluate them so the degrees can be formalized.

The MEC’s decision has angered some Brazilian students. “Why would I study for two years so I could get admitted to a Brazilian school if it would be easier to “buy” my diploma in Cuba?” asks Artur Oliveira Mendes in a email sent to a academic organization. He added: “…our schools of medicine are demoralized before the president’s declaration.”

The Brazilian students who are in Cuba were selected by the PT, PCdoB, and MST.

Senator José Agripino Maia (PFL) asked the Minister of Education Tarso Genro to explain before the Senate Education Commission why the students from Cuba are being favoured by the Brazilian government.

India: Jammu and Kashmir government orders private tuitions to shut down for 90 days

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

On Sunday, the government of Jammu and Kashmir, India, ordered private academic coaching institutions for students until and including class XII to shut down for the next three months calling those institutions “distractions” for the students; with an exception of coaching institutions preparing students for professional exams.

After meeting the heads of some educational institutions, the state’s education minister Syed Altaf Bukhari said: “We had a discussion with our principals today to how to make the education system better. We have come to a conclusion that the distractions which affect our education system […] one of those distractions are the coaching centres”. He added the government is to review the status of the tuition centres with respect to their decisions twice a month.

High schools and colleges have suspended classes since the beginning of the month. Boycotting the classes, students protested against two encounters in Shopian that resulted in the killing of four civilians as well as twelve militants. Then there were protests against the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old girl Asifa Bano in Kathua who police said was held captive and sedated at a temple in January. Retired government official Sanji Ram and several others —including multiple police officers— were arrested earlier this month for, or in relation to, the gang rape and murder of Asifa. Asifa’s corpse was found in the village of Rasana on January 10.

Some of the protesters clashed with the state security forces, and pellets were fired over the protesters. Bukhari said, “Security of the students is paramount, that is why we kept schools and colleges closed. But now the students should control their emotions and go back to their classes […] Now, enough is enough, they have their protest and should attend school now.” Bukhari went on to add that they cannot “afford to have future a generation of illiterates and uneducated.” He said the students who come to the road for protests “would be treated as rowdies”.

According to an official in Jammu and Kashmir’s education department, the motivation behind the temporary shut down of tuitions was “when the coaching centres are closed, students would not have an option but to attend schools”. Coaching Centre Association president Junaid Yousuf responded to this ban, saying: “What is the point of ordering closure of coaching centres and keeping schools open? This defies logic. You are not shutting down the places where protests occur and closed those centres where there are no protests”.

“This distraction leads to fall in attendances in schools. We are not against coaching centres; we will first see how schools function. Therefore immediately we will request and order the coaching centres to stop their shops for some time[…] We are the custodians of the students and want that they are not distracted”, the Education Minister said.

How Co Workers Can Benefit Through Carpooling.}

Submitted by: Alice Sutton

Are you feeling sick of huge traffic jams, air pollution and increasing fuel prices? Do you really wish to find a solution to this? Then not to worry since we already have a solution for this problem. All you can do is form a carpool. Carpools have proved to be the best alternative to public transport and commuting privately. With the increase in carpool sites in different countries, the awareness about carpool has also increased in these countries. We can define carpool as a ride sharing where people share their vehicles with other carpoolers and commute together. This makes a lot of sense since you save money on gas, maintenance of the vehicle and parking fees. Also you contribute in saving the environment and reduce the level of harmful gases being transmitted in the air due to traffic jams. You also get the benefit to expand your network in meeting new people.

How do employers benefit?

With the increasing prices in fuels, carpooling has attracted more and more commuters every day. Everywhere you just get to read about carpooling, whether its newspapers, magazines, radio or televisions. Everywhere you will get to read advertisements or get to hear some discussions on it. So find out why we employers should introduce this feature of covoiturage Belgique and covoiturage Luxembourg.

Some of the advantages that the employers are benefitted is that they are now able to hire workers from any geographical area who can willingly work in a relaxed and rested manner and not to forget less demand for parking area. If I was a worker and was hired in one such company than I would personally look for commuting time and the expenses for it. Sharing rides with one or more fellow employees reduces the commuting expenses significantly. At times the commuting time many not change but riders who once travelled alone can now take in more commuters to get some sleep, work, read or just listen to some music.

Workers too are less stressed since they do not have to drive alone or fight the traffic and remain alert throughout the whole journey. The true fact is they save money and are active enough to work. This research has proved details that relaxed workers tend to be more productive with better results and maintain a healthy relationship with their coworkers. In huge metropolitan cities the cost of parking vehicles is expensive for the whole day. Also building a whole parking lot for the whole staff can cost you millions. Larger parking areas require more space and the workers will have to walk for some time. It is healthy but at times it is inconvenient to walk when it is pouring or snowing. So with more and more promotion of this feature you can save millions for sure.

With employers using this feature of covoiturage Luxembourg and covoiturage Belgique can help in promoting it too. More number of workers using this feature can make this feature famous too. You can also use many of the carpooling websites to make some bookings. If you want carpool matches to be done with your co-workers then it is very important that you get the maximum number of registrations done on the website at the earliest. All the employers can do is to suggest a website for the workers to use.

Another way is that you can make sure of registering yourself with one of the car sharing services so that you reach your destination on time. This is because you will be travelling with different people and sharing it with them. So this means that if people are travelling with you, then time is very important since along with you these people too wish to reach on time. The best option is to travel in advance to avoid such situations.

Thus, becoming a part of this wise idea will be beneficial to all in many reasons. You will not only be benefitted economically but also save a lot on gas and contribute towards saving the environment too. Even huge traffic jams on the roads will lessen up soon and parking spaces will hardly be needed as well. Carpooling has now become a successful form of commuting across the country and has made it easy for commuters to share a vehicle between groups of commuters willing to reach the same destination. Generally, a shared commute can also be established through an agency responsible for riders willing to travel to the same destination. However, with the internet bringing in more facilities, you can simply go online and book yourself one or just simply go the search engine like Google to get more information on this.

Australia to detain Burmese boatpeople on Nauru

Monday, August 21, 2006

Eight Burmese boat people, who arrived off Western Australia‘s Ashmore Reef last week, say they wish to claim refugee status. The group of 8 men, aged between 24 and 40, are being held in detention on Christmas Island by the Australian Federal Government. They will be sent to Nauru after identity interviews and medical checks are completed.

According to The Age newspaper, the men are from a refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border, and may be from the Karen tribe, who are battling Burma’s brutal military Government. Karen rebels have been at war with the central Government for 57 years.

An Immigration department spokesman confirmed that the eight men claimed to be from Burma. Two of the men have contacted immigration lawyers, seeking assistance with asylum claims. David Manne, from Melbourne-based Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre, said the other six were likely to do the same. “There’s a very strong likelihood that they are genuine refugees,” he said.

The men were first spotted by the Australian Customs Service at Ashmore Reef, 610km north of Broome, WA on August 13. They were sent by Navy vessel to Christmas Island – 2,400 km northwest of Perth, WA. The men have been held since Friday as part of the Howard Government’s Pacific Solution to keep asylum seekers out of the country.

In 2005, the Department of Immigration began construction of an Immigration Reception and Processing Centre on Christmas Island, due for completion late in 2006. The facility is estimated to cost $210 million, and will contain 800 beds.

The news of the boat people’s arrival became public last week as Prime Minister John Howard scrapped controversial new migration laws. The proposed laws would have excised the Australian mainland for immigration purposes.

Ashmore Reef, already excised from Australia’s migration zone, means the men have no legal entitlement to be brought to Australia for processing. They have no access to the Australian court system to argue their claims or contest the rulings of the Immigration Department.

Mr Manne said he was concerned that the circumstances of the men’s confinement could hamper their attempts to communicate with lawyers. He said the Burmese men should be afforded the same rights as the West Papuans or Vietnamese asylum-seekers who recently made it to Australian shores. “It’s absolutely crucial these people be given a fair go, so that they can actually speak with us properly about the issues,” he said. Mr Manne says he has made several requests of the Department of Immigration in Canberra.

“They’re asylum seekers… they believe that they’d be persecuted if sent to Burma, and we have agreed to act on their behalf.” He was unable to say whether the group was dropped off by people smugglers, as Immigration Minister Senator Amanda Vanstone claims.

“What we do know is they’re seeking refugee status, that is, protection from brutal human rights abuse,” he said. The Burmese regime has recently waged an aggressive attack on Karen insurgents – forcing thousands of villagers to hide in the jungle or seek refuge in Thailand. There are 140,000 refugees in seven camps along the Thai-Burma border.

Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle says the government must allow the Burmese group to be brought to Australia to process the asylum-seeker’s claims. “The government needs to ensure that all asylum seekers are offered legal support,” she said. “The best way to ensure the Burmese asylum seekers have full access to their lawyer is to bring them to Australia while their asylum claims are assessed.”

Meanwhile the near-bankrupt Nauru Government has urged Australia to “speed up asylum seeker processing” in their country. Nauru says Australia is taking far too long to process asylum seekers. Currently two refugees remain on Nauru – both Iraqi men. The men have been held in detention on the remote tiny island for five years.

According to The Age, the Nauru Government has approved a plan to impose financial penalties on Australia if asylum seekers are forced to languish on the near-bankrupt island. The report says if they have not been processed and either returned or resettled within three months, their visas will have to be renewed each month, with the cost increasing by $500 for each renewal.

Nauru’s Foreign Minister David Adeang raised serious concerns about the mental state of the detainees. He says Muhammad Faisal’s condition worsened sharply after he was re-interviewed by ASIO. Mr Adeang has asked for the Government to evacuate the Mr Faisal immediately, he says he is also concerned about the mental health of the other Iraqi man left on Nauru. The Australian Government claims advice from ASIO that the man may be a “security threat.”

Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation, covering just 21 km². Since 2001 it has accepted aid from the Australian government. In exchange for this aid, Nauru houses an ‘offshore’ detention centre for Australia.
