Lib Dems launch manifesto

Thursday, April 14, 2005

An exhausted Charles Kennedy returned to the election campaign to launch a twenty page Liberal Democrat manifesto targeted at disaffected Labour voters, promising a fairer tax system and withdrawal from Iraq.

Entitled The Real Alternative the manifesto pledges to reduce the lowest rate of income tax, but increase the rate on those earning over £100,000 to 50%. The party would also scrap the unpopular local council tax in favour of a new local income tax. The manifesto also promises to remove hidden “stealth taxes”.

Under this system the party claims the poorest 15 million (25%) of people in Britain would be better off, and the middle 50% would be paying no extra tax.

The manifesto promised to scrap the controversial university tuition fees, increase services for pensioners and add £100 a month to the state pension, and train 21,000 new primary school teachers and 10,000 new police. A Lib Dem government would make eye and dental checks free, and reduce the cost of prescription medicine.

The Liberal Democrats were the only one of the three largest parliamentary parties to have consistently voted against the Iraq war, and the manifesto has promised an exit strategy with a phased withdrawal of Britain’s 8,000 troops still in the country.

“We reject a foreign policy based on ‘my ally right or wrong’,” Kennedy said. “And we say that war should always be a last resort.”

Kennedy, who became a father on Tuesday, admitted he’d had little sleep before the manifesto launch, and stumbled while answering questions on the proposed tax system.

U.S. Secret Service conducts drone exercise

Thursday, March 12, 2015

The Associated Press (AP) reported on Tuesday the U.S. Secret Service is conducting drone exercises over Washington, D.C. to defend against unmanned aerial vehicles being flown over the area.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the Secret Service to conduct these flying exercises. The exercises are to be over parts of D.C. airspace which is normally off-limits below 18,000 feet, also called a no-fly aone or the D.C. flight restricted zone. The exercises are to take place in the very early morning hours over the next several weeks.

According to AP, a U.S. official speaking under condition of anonymity said the agency is testing these drones for law enforcement and to defend against potentially dangerous drones, but declined to comment on the specific details because they’re classified. However, they sought to prevent concerns by possible witnesses by publicizing their intent to conduct tests. The agency is cautious of witnesses of unmanned aerial vehicles flying over D.C. because of a drone sighting incident several weeks ago. Witnesses saw several unidentified drones flying over Paris, France, which caused concerns.

AP said techniques to be tested include signal jamming. Most drones use radio-frequency signals for remote control. Intercepting these signals might allow tracking the drones. Jamming, though, could interrupt Wi-Fi of people in the vicinity.

The FAA last month announced preliminary guidelines requiring UAVs be operated within sight of the operator, prohibiting night flying, and requiring speeds below 100 miles per hour (about 160 kph) and altitudes below 500 feet.

Adam Aircraft suspends activities at Utah factory, lays off 300 workers amid financial difficulties

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Adam Aircraft Industries has laid off 300 members of its 800-strong workforce and suspended operations at their plant in Ogden, Utah. The moves come as the result of unexpected financial difficulties.

In addition, Adam is transferring much of its work at Pueblo, Colorado to its headquarters at Centennial. The only operations that are to continue in Pueblo is machine shop work. In addition to these three locations, Adam had previously been considering the possibility of a plant at New Mexico.

Fifty employees were laid off at the Ogden facility, 170 in Pueblo and 80 in Centennial. Ogdon is planned to remain inoperational for six months. Laid off workers may be able to obtain new positions within the company when production resumes.

Adam Aircraft are producing two carbon composite aircraft: the Adam A500 twin-engine piston aircraft, which is certified and due to enter full production soon, and the Adam A700 very light jet, which is undergoing US federal certification processes.

Adam Aircraft spokesperson Shelly Simi said that the company is looking for between US$75 million and $100 million, and that they are in talks with Citibank to secure these funds.

Adam secured $93 million in August 2006, and $105 million in June 2007. The A500 is valued at $1.2 million and the A700 at $2.5 million. Seventeen A500s have been manufactured, of which seven have been delivered to customers. The backlog of orders totals around $1 billion.

Adam Aircraft President Duncan Koerbel released a statement that said To provide for our future growth, we must be strategic in our focus by managing current cash expenditures to ensure adequate time to secure financing for the long term. We’re off to a good start in this effort with assistance from our partner, Citibank, but we need to be able to provide them with sufficient time working with potential investors to secure long term financing.”

Ford Trucks Vs. Chevy Trucks: Why All The Hostility?}

Ford Trucks vs. Chevy Trucks: Why all the Hostility?

by

David S. Brooks

Standing in the sweltering, wet-wool-blanket air of DFW on a Friday morning in July, I began to panic at the mostly empty state of my pockets. Fearing that my car keys were wedged in a grimy seatback pocket or nestled in a weathered bowl next to some security checkpoint, I started to scramble. Some of my forehead sweat had nothing to do with the 90%+ humidity. Relief set in when I remembered that I had left my keys at home on purpose. The H on my security remote could have gotten me lynched here.

Among the sea of Ford, Dodge and Chevy rigs, I managed to flag-down my cousin in his GMC. See, the professional grade version of a regular-old Chevy truck is somewhat of a smart alternative brand herelike a Saab might be where Im from. Feeling the full-blast relief of triple AC vents blasting my face, I began to examine the truck brand hostility by digging for my cousins perspective. He dropped a wad of brown spit into the empty Big Gulp in one cup holder and set his beer into the other. He had what he considered an outsiders perspective on the biggest conflict of all: Ford versus Chevy. He was an outcast from the Ford circles, and a somewhat-acceptable outsider who could enter the Chevy clans on a temporary guest pass only. He said the two groups rarely knowingly mixed, and when they did knowingly mix, they either ignored the white elephant on the barbecue or picked fights. To get a first-hand look at the clash, wed have to get in on a neighborhood gathering where the meat and the Marlboros were both being chain smoked. We needed to get into someones backyard barbecue.

Luckily, 5:00 was approaching on a Friday in Texas. BBQ was immanent; four yards were linking up for a huge one at 6. People from up to 5 or so blocks would be on the way. Since most of the all-American truck owners coming have their eyes set on 20 or so beers, theyd be leaving their trucks at home and hoofing it. Unless somebody rolled up a sleeve, Ford and Chevy owners would be mingling and either not know it, or know it and just internalize it. Perfecta hotbed for studying the hostility between fans of the two automakers.

Talking to one of these guys was like talking to a hundred. I didnt know this until I had talked to a hundred, though. You see, (fill in short name starting with a J here) works 12-hour days as a (fill in construction or trade job you can do without a license for cash under the table) to pay for his (Ford or Chevy), new gear for his (Ford or Chevy), and a case of (Bud, Miller or Coors), even though his (wife or girlfriend or mom) gives him crap about getting his act together. He was raised to love (Ford or Chevy) from the beginning and to hate (Ford or Chevy), because (Fords or Chevys) break down all the time and have less power. Besides (Ford or Chevy) is the real all-American brandnot (Ford or Chevy). His dad and his dads dad and his dads dads dad drove a (Ford or Chevy), which is the way its always been and its never changing.

A fascinating pattern developed. Within the narrow scope of acceptable brands, the Ford guys gravitated toward the same beers, the same grocery stores, the same restaurants with goofy crap on the walls. Same with the Chevy guys. While the F-Series crew swigged Coors, took a drag off a Winston and picked a little pork out of their teeth before packing a pinch of Cope, the Silverado gang chucked their Bud can in the bushes and snuffed-out their Marlboro before creating an indistinguishable mix of rib sauce and Kodiak spit on their lower lip. The guys at the Bud bucket were talking about watching the race at Hooters the next day; the clan around the Coors cooler was just finishing their plans for the TGI Fridays gathering.

Have these massive bodies of truck owners been dancing around each other for years? Or, had they picked the rest of their brands around staying as segregated as possible from the loathsome morons driving the other brand of truck? What must an entire life spent making so many choices from so few options, locked into a life course based on the path of 4 generations of men before you, be like? Not a man questioned it. Not a one wondered what the inside of a Toyota was like, or how their tongues would handle a Heineken, or if a few drags of Turkish Gold would produce a level of nicotine nirvana that changes ones view of the world. Heck, these brands arent even reaching very far at all, and theyd be enough to set millions of worlds on tilt.

Just as I was on the brink of a sociological breakthrough, a big bastard named BJ wandered in wearing a way-too-tight black shirt with the genius slogan Id Rather Be Cummin Than Strokin in bright white letters stretched across his belly. A Dodge man was in the yard now. Allegiances were about to be declared. Let the red-faced drunken yelling and fist throwing begin. Then, the answer was so clear: all of the Chevy and Ford and Dodge hostility was fueled by blind hate and fear. These goons needed something to belong tosomething that couldnt tell them they couldnt belong to itso they felt some sense of identity though their souls were mostly voids with cancer stick residue and macro-brew foam as a slick lining. They lacked the mental capacity to accept things that are different. Not to do different things, but just to accept them. So they stacked their trucks with Chevy accessories and Ford accessories like the silver hairs on a Gorilla, wildly screamed at each other on the highways or the local Sonic, and came to blows any time they got close enough to do so. Theyd never branch out or calm down, because theyd have nothing left if they did. Theyd have to get to know themselves, which is the last person theyd ever want to hang out with. And, they could never admit this brand-loyalist BS has been a wasted life path for four generations now, so they push the fifth one right into the same thing. That way, they can at least relate.

Having finally found my answer, I made my next move by harnessing the same sensibility I learned in, oh, elementary school or so: I fled for the airport as fast as I could.

Watch out for the hate-filled goons with tons of

Ford truck accessories

or

Chevy truck accessories

, because theyll probably end up fighting you over truck brand loyalty. – David S. Brooks

Green Day dominates at MTV’s 2005 Video Music Awards

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

MTV‘s 2005 Video Music Awards were rather unbalanced this year, with Green Day’s capture of seven of the eight awards for which they were nominated. The awards were for their single “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” off of the American Idiot album. Up-and-coming rock bands Fall Out Boy and The Killers also won awards. Kelly Clarkson came out with two awards.

The event was hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, USA, which was unaffected by the passing of Hurricane Katrina through the area or by the shooting of rap producer “Suge” Knight.

Some notable events was Combs “conducting” a string orchestra in memory of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G while his song played, fellow rapper Snoop Dogg came out to sing the last verse of B.I.G’s hit song “Warning”.

Green Day arrived at the event in their rusted green convertible from the Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams music videos. They kicked off the show with a performance of Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

R. Kelly performed a new segment to his soap opera song “Trapped In The Closet”. Kelly remains a chart-topper even though the star is awaiting trial for child pornography charges.

Marion “Suge” Knight was shot in the leg at a private party, hosted by Kanye West, at the Shore Club Saturday night, one day before the main event. He was taken to nearby Mount Sinai Hospital where he was treated for the non-lethal gunshot wound.

Tips For Plumbing In Jacksonville, Fl

byadmin

You probably don’t think about your pipes very often; you flush the toilet or unplug the drain and the water just disappears. It’s the definition of “out of sight and out of mind.” However, when something goes wrong, your plumbing is just about the only thing you can think about. Luckily, pipe problems tend not to happen suddenly. They have a few warning signs. Before you call a plumber, you should troubleshoot any potential problems to make sure that they aren’t something you can solve yourself. A plumber can be very expensive, and it would be a shame to hire one when you really just needed a little elbow grease.

Clogged Tub Drain

A clogged tub drain is probably the most common problem with your pipes, especially if you live in a household with long-haired individuals. Hair and soap are two of the most common culprits. The first thing you can do is attempt to clear it with a liquid rooter such as Drano. Follow very precisely the instructions on the package. Alternately, you can invest in a snake from the local hardware store. A drain snake can be used over and over, so it’s probably the better choice. If none of that works, you should call someone who specializes in plumbing in Jacksonville, FL.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure could be the result of many different things. If it is cold outside, you might have pipes that are partially frozen. Run the water in a steady stream for a few minutes; if ice is the culprit, the moving water will melt it. If it’s not cold outside, you might have a clog somewhere from the main to your fixture. Test other fixtures. If multiple fixtures have low water pressure, you have a serious plumbing problem brewing. If it’s only the one, you might still need to call a plumber but it’s not quite as urgent of a problem.

Former Scottish Conservatives leader Annabel Goldie to stand down as MSP

Friday, June 26, 2015

Annabel Goldie, Scottish Conservative Party leader from 2005 to 2011, has announced she will stand down as an MSP at the next elections in 2016. Goldie, who has been an MSP for the West Scotland (previously West of Scotland) electoral region since the Scottish Parliament’s formation in 1999, said she intends to focus on her role in the House of Lords, where she has been a peer since 2013.File:Annabel Goldie.jpg

In a statement today, Goldie said leading the party was an “enormous honour” for her. She also said: “It has afforded me both satisfaction and pleasure to serve my constituents and to serve the parliament and I will look back with great happiness at my time as an MSP. I am grateful to friends and colleagues from all parties for their support. Sometimes we found common ground, sometimes we disagreed but never I hope with rancour nor disrespect. Politics is a rough trade but we have built a strong parliament in Scotland of which we can all be rightly proud.” She said because of Ruth Davidson, her successor as Scottish Conservative leader, the party is now “in fine fettle and stands a great chance of making real progress in the years ahead,” concluding by saying: “I look forward to continuing to work as part of that effort in the House of Lords in the years to come.”

Davidson responded to the news by calling Goldie an “unstoppable force”, adding: “She has been an inspiration to a whole generation of Scottish Conservatives, and she has been a tremendous mentor, support and friend to me. In Holyrood, she has fostered both affection and respect from all members – regardless of their political affiliation – and her retirement from the Scottish Parliament will leave an Annabel-sized hole which won’t ever quite be filled. She is unique.” Meanwhile, David Cameron, UK Conservative leader and UK Prime Minister, said: “Annabel is one of those rare breeds in Scottish politics, somebody known by her first name alone. When she was Scottish Conservative leader, I valued her sage advice. She has been a towering strength to our party in Scotland, a doughty debater in the TV studios and Scottish Parliament and has one of the sharpest wits around. I wish her a long and happy retirement after 17 years unstinting service at Holyrood – but look forward to seeing her on the red benches of the Lords for years to come.”

In Holyrood, she has fostered both affection and respect from all members – regardless of their political affiliation – and her retirement from the Scottish Parliament will leave an Annabel-sized hole which won’t ever quite be filled. She is unique.

Goldie, the Scottish Conservatives’ first ever female leader, was elected unopposed. She took up the role in the aftermath of David McLetchie’s resignation from the role in an expenses usage controversy and subsequent resignation of Brian Monteith from his Conservative whip role in the Scottish Parliament for briefing the media against him. Meanwhile, as Scottish Conservatives won 18 seats in the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and 2003, the party had been less successful in UK general elections in Scotland; Conservatives went up from zero out of a possible 72 UK MPs in Scotland in 1997 to one in 2001. This led to Goldie remarking in her inaugural speech in 2005 that: “The wheels are back on the wagon – and I’m the nag hitched up to tow it.” She also said: “The party is still way ahead of where it was in 1997. And my first task is to take it forward to 2007.” However, under Goldie’s leadership, the number of seats the Scottish Conservatives won in the Scottish Parliament slightly decreased from 18 in 2003 to 17 in 2007 and to 15 in 2011. At the same time, the number of Conservative MPs stood at one out of a possible 59 after the 2010 UK general election.

In the aforementioned 2005 speech, she also said the party could be trusted with devolution in Scotland, adding: “making devolution work better means real devolution: not the lumbering and cripplingly expensive array of government departments, government advisers, consultants, quangos, quasi-quangos and agencies with all their expensive appendages, but devolving down to people and their communities, their right to make their own decisions about their lives, how for example they procure healthcare and how they educate their children.” Goldie would go on to sit on the advisory board for the Smith Commission, which was set up to examine which further political powers should be devolved to Scotland following the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. More recently, Goldie supported a reduction in the voting age for Scottish Parliament elections from 18 to 16 in a vote earlier this month, commenting: “I think it is an opportunity for them to continue their high level of engagement in topical affairs that we saw with the independence referendum.”

Goldie, a member of the Salvation Army’s West of Scotland Advisory Board and a Church of Scotland elder, is not the only Scottish Conservative MSP intending to stand down in 2016. Mary Scanlon, Gavin Brown, Alex Fergusson and Nanette Milne all reportedly intend to leave the Scottish Parliament next year.
