More And More Serious Water Crisis In Central Asia

By HImfr Ivy

In the dry Central Asian region, there is a resource, very valuable and scarce, and even more important than oil and gas, which is water.

The so-called Central Asia, mainly referring to the five post-Soviet Central Asian countries (including Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan) and Afghanistan. In the past 18 years, most foreign investors regard the focus on the region’s energy and mineral resource extraction industries, but the region’s water crisis is getting worse.

18 years of complex negotiations

Central Asia dry climate makes the water very scarce, but it is very unevenly distributed. There are two rivers in the region, 1,500 miles of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya 1380 miles long.

Since 1918, the Soviet Union tried to Central Asia through the deployment of water resources for agricultural development, and thus a larger share of global cotton market. 40 years since the last century, unified construction of irrigation networks in Central Asia, the program was implemented and strengthened in the 60’s and since then the Soviet Union in Central Asia to become the white gold (cotton) is the main source. Until 1991 before they are all unified deployment of the Soviet Union. 1960 to 2000, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya’s water consumption doubled, also contributed to cotton production doubled during this period, while the decline in water level caused by the Aral Sea.

But Central Asia’s land resources, water resources, energy resources and distribution is extremely uneven.

Central Asia’s two rivers originate in the Pamir and Tianshan Mountains, the river from west to east through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and then flows to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, ultimately into the Aral Sea. Therefore, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, known as the upstream countries, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are referred to as the downstream countries.

First, from the water demand, water-rich countries can use the upstream area of agricultural land few. For example, in Tajikistan, only 7% of the land within the territory suitable for cultivation, so the proportion of agricultural water use is low. Water scarcity in the downstream countries, vast areas of agricultural land. Example, among the five countries in Central Asia, the upstream countries, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are relatively poor, lower than the national economic development, but the region upstream of the two countries have 90% of the water resources, while Uzbekistan has more than 50% of the region The water used for cotton production, while cotton accounts for 60% foreign exchange earnings.

Second, fossil energy resources in Central Asia mainly in the west, that is, downstream countries, mainly in the eastern part of water resources, that is, the upstream country.

For example, in Tajikistan, according to U.S. government estimates, in 2006 only Tajikistan produced 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas, forcing it imported 4.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas to meet national needs. Because water resources are the country’s main resource, the country hopes to rely on the resources to solve major domestic economic development.

If you just use their own resources, Uzbekistan can only guarantee 14% of its water demand, Kazakhstan can only guarantee 45% of its water needs.

Soviet Union, the planned economic system makes the state a variety of resources to deploy the power of unity, the distribution of water resources in Central Asia is based on the complementary resources to design patterns, that is, the allocation of water resources should be the largest agricultural output as the objective. Thus the upper reaches of the summer release on water conservancy facilities, to ensure the country’s agricultural irrigation water downstream. In return, the downstream countries, countries in the winter for the upstream gas and coal resources to meet their energy needs.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, relations between the original water allocation gradually be disrupted. With oil, gas and coal prices rose year by year, the downstream countries are beginning to export to other countries, fossil energy. Upstream of the two countries to avoid paying increasingly expensive energy import costs, starting in the summer and spring water to raise power generation capacity in winter, protect the country’s energy supply.

As a result, the downstream countries are not enough in spring and summer because the water supply, agricultural production has been greatly affected. Meanwhile, the upstream countries, power in the winter a lot of water distribution, resulting in downstream countries to increase water supply in winter, while downstream countries in this season’s agricultural production to a standstill, unable to digest too much water, causing flooding in winter. Therefore, the upstream countries and downstream countries are getting nervous.

In order to solve water allocation problems, 1992, 5 countries in Central Asia Cooperation Committee was set up cross-border water resources, but after 18 years of complex negotiations failed to clear on the Syr Darya and Amu Darya River to solve the water problem, countries can only to act according to their own interests or to seek bilateral cooperation. This region is very fragmented water management institutions, from six different countries to common control, these countries regard each other as rivals, the main contradiction concentrated in upstream countries and downstream countries, lack of cooperation and competition.

Upstream and downstream countries, the argument is, the downstream countries want the upstream countries to have regular water distribution for irrigation and that water is not a commodity, and oil and gas are not the same. On the contrary, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan insist that if the financial or energy support that can not make it through the winter months, they will continue in the fall and winter water distribution to power generation to meet their own needs, because no other energy options, and thus would not be concerned about the lower reaches of the country’s agricultural problems.

Cheap, safe drug shows potential to kill cancer cells

Sunday, February 11, 2007

Recent tests have shown that an inexpensive drug may be able to kill cancer cells in humans. Dichloroacetate, a drug generally used to treat rare metabolic disorders, has shown the potential to assist in the treatment of brain, lung, and breast cancers, researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada say.

Dr. Evangelos Michelakis of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada found that that DCA causes tumor regressions in animals with human cancers. Testing showed that DCA attacked cancer cells but did not attack healthy cells.

The researchers and the Alberta Cancer Board and Capital Health do not advise the use of DCA to treat cancer yet, as clinical trials for the drugs use to treat cancer have not been performed yet.

Unlike healthy cells, cancerous cells do not convert food molecules into energy in the mitochondria. Instead, they rely on a process known as glycolysis, which takes place in the main body of the cell, while the mitochondria are “shut down”, researchers believe possibly due to the lack of oxygen supply to cells in the middle of a tumor.

This means that another key function of the mitochondria – to activate an abnormal cell’s self-destruct mechanism, apoptosis – is also blocked.

When Dichloroacetate (DCA) enters a cancer cell, it restarts the mitochondria which in turn activate apoptosis, and the cancerous cell destroys itself.

DCA is known to be relatively safe, although pain, numbness and gait disturbances may occur. The drug is also expected to be cheaper to manufacture than other drugs since there is no patent for it.

Wikinews interviews spokesman for Greek far-left party Xekinima

Monday, May 3, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald today interviewed Petros Tzomakas, a Greek far-left activist and member of Xekinima, which is the Greek division of the Committee for a Workers’ International. The party is a member of Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA).

Tzomakas also sits on his local 5th Athens Municipal District committee, which is a joint effort by left-wing parties including SYRIZA, the Anticapitalist Left Cooperation for the Overthrow and a number of other political parties to oppose austerity measures proposed by the government. All left-wing parties in the country except the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) are involved. Tzomakas explained that the KKE prefers not to co-operate with other radical left-wing groups.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

The Importance Of Repairing Broken Air Vents

byAlma Abell

Is a broken air vent causing issues and costing you money in your home or business? The surprising truth is probably more than you realize. For most people, air vents more than likely never really cross their minds. In many cases an air vent is placed in an area that is easily over looked, like high up near the ceiling or perhaps even behind furniture. Esthetically this is can be a good thing, but sometimes it can also be a hindrance of basic home maintenance and repair.

Signs You May Need Air Vent Repair:

 • Specific rooms not heating/cooling

 • Suffering from allergies

 • Odd or displeasing smells

 • Higher heating/cooling bills

Flow into Better Air Quality

Over time air vents collect dust and other particles or debris that can create poor ventilation issues. This can cause a significant increase in how hard a heating and cooling system has to work, thus resulting in higher energy bills each month. As if that is not enough incentive to check your home for any needed air vent repair, it can also increase the amount of allergens circulating in your home. Smell something odd? Odd odors in your home, especially those contained in specific rooms could be signs of mold growth within your vent or its filter. This could potentially cause issues for not only allergy sufferers, but for those who have asthma as well.

Call a Professional and Breathe Easy

If you have noticed any of the signs mentioned above, take the time to call a professional to check the air vents in your home. You can get the most out of your air ventilation systems by utilizing the services of companies like Duct Armor, who specializes in products and services that optimize the performance and quality of your ventilation systems and essentially the air you breathe.

Theo Walcott deal goes through for Arsenal

Friday, January 20, 2006

Today, Arsenal have confirmed that they will be adding Theo Walcott to their side, after a 12.5 million pound deal was struck, on the premise that he pass rigorous medical examinations. Although the 16-year-old striker cannot sign until he turns 17 on 16 March, Wenger seems to see this only as a formality, as the player is set to be unveiled today at Highbury.

Although there are not many other details at this moment, it is thought that he will not be able to return to Southampton on loan, due to the hectic schedule that he will have at Arsenal. Whatever way the deal may turn out, it seems that Theo’s family are with him whatever he does.

Virginians melee at used Apple iBook sale

Thursday, August 18, 2005

“Total chaos” is how many described the melee that resulted from a sale of used Apple iBook laptop computers at the Richmond International Raceway (RIR) by the Henrico County, Virginia school system.

Officials estimated nearly 5,000 people thronged the sale for the $50, four-year-old computers. Among them were 17 injured, four requiring hospitalization – one for a leg injury, and three for heat-related illness, said Henrico County Police. Reports of trampling in the stampede were not uncommon, and one driver reportedly tried to drive through the throng of prospective buyers.

Alice Jemerson, an elderly customer said, “They bum rushed the gates and I was knocked over, fighting for my life. All these people were on top of me.”

Shortly after 7am EST officials opened the gates and many residents ran hysterically toward the building where the sale was to occur at 9am.

At a post sale press conference, Henrico County Police spokesman Lieutenant Doug Perry told reporters, “A few bad apples found their way inside. It looked worse than it was.”

Apple iBooks are the preferred computer for Henrico County schools, and Director of General Services of Henrico County Paul Proto, said changes were made to the event after tremendous interest was generated, some as far away as Europe and California. Officials closed and moved the sale from the Henrico county school warehouse to the RIR, after residents complained that their tax dollars were used to buy the computers, and they ought to have first right to repurchase them. The Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted to amend the County Code so that only residents could purchase the laptop computers.

Although officials had prohibited camping out and overnight parking, some in attendance reported that people began arriving at midnight.

Henrico Police Chief H.W. Stanley, Jr. said five patrol officers were originally planned for the event, a customary presence for an event the size authorities had estimated. But by 6 am, an enormous crowd was assembled at the front gate.

Officials present before opening told the crowd that automobiles would be allowed to enter first, which prompted many to run to their cars. But while some were running back to their cars, others rushed the gate. The resulting confusion created much anger, and guards closed the gates shortly thereafter.

Long lines encircling the sale building were commonplace, and one observer noted, “They’re going to see themselves on the news tonight, and see what fools they are.”

Some citizens, however, considered their wait worthwhile. Hairstylist and mother of two Sheress Blunt was one of the first hundred to buy one of the iBooks; she came with her mother and said they sneaked into the raceway through a side gate.

Tonya Vaughan arrived at 5:30 a.m., also bought one of the first iBooks and said three people offered to buy it from her for as much as $200. She declined however, saying, “I told them no way! I had worked too hard for it.”

Lt. Perry said many officers were complimented on the way they handled the crowd, adding that police were seen letting children who had been pushed aside, into the building.

Mr. Proto said, “There are no plans right now to have another iBook sale.”

Henrico County Battalion Police Chief Steve Wood said no arrests were made and the iBooks were sold out by 1pm EST.

Woman killed in house fire in South Yorkshire, England

Monday, January 25, 2010

An elderly woman has died in a house fire in South Yorkshire, England. The woman, who is currently remaining unidentified, was blind and 93-years-old when her bungalow in Sheffield caught fire as a result of an accident in her kitchen yesterday afternoon.

An internal investigation into the fire has suggested that while the woman was cooking, she dropped a towel onto one of the stovetops while attempting to move a pan on the cooker. The towel then set alight. When she attempted to put out the fire, the towel dropped to the side of the cooker, alongside some plastic bags.

A smoke alarm sounded; a nearby resident heard the alarm and went to assist. The neighbour managed to break into the bedroom window of the bungalow in order to be able to get inside the building. The person made it to the hallway but had to double back upon seeing the fire and the smoke. It is believed that the woman was overwhelmed by the fumes given out from the plastic which was burning.

At around 1350 GMT, fire service workers entered the elderly lady’s residence to find her collapsed inside the kitchen. People investigating the incident have come to the conclusion that this particular fire was an accidental one. A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service noted: “Neighbours who tried to enter the property were fought back by smoke and flames.”
