Hygiene Guide For Bartenders

Submitted by: Ryan Barm

These are a range of standards to remember regarding cleanliness and safety measures in a public bar. It is easy to forget that these standards are also laws in many states which is why they need to be mentioned for the protection of your coworkers, yourself, and even your customers! Losing a customer can be as simple as not following these guidelines on a single shift.

Before each shift make sure your personal hygiene is taken care of. Your clothes, hair, and revealed skin should look well-kept. The better you look, the more it will reflect in tips. You want to be sure you have fresh breath, and smell good as well. The distance between you and the customer is less than you think. They will be able smell any bad odors you may be giving off. So if you just left the gym or woke up from a nap, clean yourself up before heading to your shift.

Keep your bar clean and organized so that customers have no reason to turn away. Always wash and shine bar equipment like bar spoons and cocktail strainers once you’ve used them before serving the next drink. You should wash your hands often and dry them – particularly just after contact with citrus garnishes. You’ll avoid scaling of the hands and the transfer of bacteria.

Take a look at your your hands – especially your fingernails. Customers can always see them and will notice if they re particularly dirty. Keep your nails cut short and try to have any noticeable smudges on them. They re hands for goodness sake, but they also touch everything you serve up. Use neutral nail polish colors so the focus is on you and your drinks instead of your bright nail polish. Avoid overfilling glasses. It will end in spills which can get on the customers clothes or all over the bar. If it ends up on the floor then it encourages slips which can be a safety hazard. Do yourself a favor and leave room in the glass so the customer can safely carry it from point A to point B.

Try to remember the most important rule in the food and beverage industry, Always be doing something. You should never find yourself saying, There s nothing to do. It is the fastest way to get yourself fired. If you don t have customers approaching the bar look around, you can find several things to do in your downtime. Are the liquor bottles organized, with labels all facing the same way and clean on the outside? When was the last time you polished all of the pint and wine glasses? Can you arrange your station so that it is easier to use when you finally get a customer? How about used napkins, glassware, and straws around the bar? This rule of thumb can be used by servers, barbacks, and bartenders alike. Always find something to do and make yourself useful. Otherwise you may be seeing your way out of a job.

Remember to be proactive regarding cleanliness. The importance cannot be stressed enough. Both your employer and your customer will appreciate the effort made.

Galatasaray clinch 17th Turkish title

Sunday, May 11, 2008

After the final match of the season, Galatasaray became the champions of Turkish Super League with 79 points in 34 games, six points ahead of rivals Besiktas and Fenerbahce.

The 50th season of the top-flight football league in Turkey ended Saturday as Galatasaray and Fenerbahce qualify for next season’s Champions League, third-place Be?ikta? J.K. and Federation Cup winner Kayserispor qualify for the UEFA Cup. There was disappointment for Sivasspor, who came fourth by having same points with Besiktas but less goal average.

Galatasaray trainer Cevat Guler stated that, “There may have been times in recent weeks when the fans didn’t think we would be champions… but we are delighted and thank everyone for their support.”

The Istanbul-based club started season with German coach Karl-Heinz Feldkamp, who resigned at the start of April, citing differences with the management. Galatasaray were two points behind Fenerbahçe when Cevat Guler took over in a caretaker role. Also, the team hit by number of injuries, including two key foreign players of this season – Linderoth and Lincoln. However they accomplished five victories in last five games of season and clinched the 17th title for Galatasaray S.K.

After the match, thousands of Turks of all ages rallied at Istanbul’s central Taksim Square to celebrate with fireworks, flags and slogans, singing the club anthems. Similar celebrations took place in big cities like Ankara and ?zmir in the huge outdoor parties, organized on the spot, letting them join their voice with millions of fans around the country celebrating the 17th title of the club.

CanadaVOTES: CHP candidate Vicki Gunn in York—Simcoe

Friday, October 10, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with Vicki Gunn. Gunn is a candidate in Ontario’s York—Simcoe riding, running under the Christian Heritage Party of Canada (CHP) banner. The CHP is a minor, registered political party running a significant number of candidates across the country, looking to earn its first ever seat in the House of Commons.

The riding has existed from 1968 to 1979, from 1988 to 1997, and from 2004 to present. As of the next provincial election in Ontario, it will be recognised as a provincial electoral district as well. Over the years, the riding has been represented by the Liberal Party, Progressive Conservative Party, again by the Progressive Conservatives, again by the Liberals, and since its recreation, the seat has been held by the Conservative Party of Canada.

Peter Van Loan, the Conservative incumbent, is the Minister Responsible for Democratic Reform and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. The other candidates in the riding, besides Van Loan and the CHP’s Gunn, are New Democrat Sylvia Gerl, Liberal Judith Moses, and the Green Party‘s John Dewar.

The following is an interview with Gunn, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.

Ontario Votes 2007: Interview with Green candidate Peter Ormond, Hamilton Centre

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Peter Ormond is running for the Green Party of Ontario in the Ontario provincial election, in the Hamilton Centre riding. Wikinews’ Nick Moreau interviewed him regarding his values, his experience, and his campaign.

Ormond did not answer three questions: “Which of your competitors do you expect to pose the biggest challenge to your candidacy? Why? What makes you the most desirable of all candidates running in the riding?”, “Are the property taxes in your riding at a fair level for the amount of services received in the municipality?”, and “Of the decisions made by Ontario’s 38th Legislative Assembly, which was the most beneficial to your this electoral district? To the province as a whole? Which was least beneficial, or even harmful, to your this riding? To the province as a whole?”

Stay tuned for further interviews; every candidate from every party is eligible, and will be contacted. Expect interviews from Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democratic Party members, Ontario Greens, as well as members from the Family Coalition, Freedom, Communist, Libertarian, and Confederation of Regions parties, as well as independents.

Blinded By The Light}

Blinded By The Light

Anthony Arrigo

Want to guess the number one reason people install outdoor lighting? So they can see at night, of course. Improving nighttime visibility is what it’s all about. Did you know that often times the lights we install to help us to see at night actually hinder our ability to do so? It’s true. Sadly, improperly chosen outdoor lighting is almost the norm.

Many people choose an outdoor light fixture that’s pretty” to look at in the daytime, with absolutely no consideration for how it will perform at night. The pretty” brass & glass fixtures that are so common nowadays often shine more horizontally than down. This means that the majority of the light these fixtures put out is aimed right into your eyes. Think that’ll improve your visibility? Nope, not even a little.

What you’re experiencing, even if you don’t know it, is a form of light pollution known as glare. Glare is the result of an excessive contrast between bright and dark areas. Light shining into the eyes of drivers and pedestrians is glare. Glare is a particularly important issue in road safety, as poorly shielded lights along roadways may partially blind drivers or pedestrians and contribute to accidents.

Wow! The very lights we install to help us see can actually reduce our visibility if they’re not chosen wisely. I’ll come out on record and say it. Lighting manufacturers should not be allowed to sell these vision robbing glare bombs. They are dangerous and inefficient products that can be immediately replaced by better and more efficient designs already on the market.

Fortunately, there are a large and rapidly growing number of attractive, high quality outdoor lights for homes, businesses and communities. These don’t cost any more to purchase and often will be significantly cheaper to operate due to more efficient use of the light produced.

Many communities have begun requiring the use of exterior light fixtures that only shine light down. This significantly improves nighttime visibility while also dramatically improving the views of the night sky as an added bonus. Hopefully, these night sky friendly” outdoor lighting ordinances will continue to spread. There might even be one under discussion in your community?

2012 Report on Gender Equality and Development looks at women’s issues in India

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Yesterday, World Bank released its 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development. India was mentioned over 300 times in the report, many more times than more developed countries like Spain which was mentioned 48 times, New Zealand which was mentioned 15 times, and Canada which was mentioned 22 times.

The report mentions the importance of gender equality for national development as it ties into improve productivity, improved outcomes for the next generation, and more representative decision making. Across the board for India, improved gender equality on the local level led to improvements in sanitation, water supplies, irrigation, and schools.

Nationally, the report found that a woman’s income correlated positively with the number of years her children spent in school. There is no gender gap in male/female school attendance for the richest 20% of Indian families, but males outnumber females by a ratio of 5 to 1 for the poorest 20% of Indian families. Girls in the bottom 20% on average only finish Grade 1 while males finish Grade 6. By age 15, according to Young Lives, Indian parents from Andhra Pradesh prioritize family outcomes for their male children over their female ones.

Indian women earn $0.64 for every $1 earned by their male counterparts. They fare better proportionally than their female German counterparts who earn $0.62 and Georgia who earn $0.60. In the developing world, they lag behind Malawi where women earn $0.90 for every $1 earned by men, Egypt where women earn $0.82, and Benin and Mexico at $0.80. A fifth of married Indian women, including those with their own income, do not make decisions on household spending. The 18% average puts Indian female control of their earnings equal to their counterparts in Mozambique. India is between Nigeria at 14%, and Zambia and Rwanda at 20%.

Indian women are having fewer children. The report found that while it took 100 years for the average woman in the United States to go from having six children to having three, it took India only 35 years. Women still have high maternal mortality rates, especially when compared to neighboring Sri Lanka. India’s rate is six times as high. Very young females still die at very high rates in India, especially in North India, because of gender preferences for male children. While according to the report this trend is spreading nationally, the overall number of excess females deaths dropped by 8,000 from 265,000 in 1990 to 257,000 in 2008. In China, the total excess female deaths grew by 202,000. The report cites improved access to ultra-sound and similar technologies as a cause for the very high rates in both India and China because it allows parents to select the sex of their child.

In a national exception, the height of North Indian women increased more slowly and they had worse anthropometric outcomes proportional to their male counterparts.

Estimates by the World Bank report writers based on Demographic and Health Surveys suggest 15% of Indian women think it is acceptable for a husband to beat his wife if she refuses to have sex with him, 20% if she burns food and 30% if she argues with him.

Economic well being plays a role in the number of children a woman has. The richest 20% of women average around 1.5 total children. The poorest 20% average about 4 children. India’s poorest 20% is comparable to Colombia and the Dominican Republic. The number is much lower than many Afrian countries including Niger, Mali, Zambia, Malawi, Liberia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Kenya where the poorest 20% average over 7 children.

The Indian gains highlighted include several local ones. This includes using women’s self-help groups focused on taking best practices from research and applying them in farming in the state of Orissa. The Self Employed Women’s Association has assisted women in Gujarat by providing childcare. Quotas for women elected in local governments led to changes in underlying beliefs about the effectiveness of women in government. The creation of an all-women’s police force in Tamil Nadu led to increased reporting of crimes against women and general comfort in going to the police to report a problem.

The report offers several pieces of advice for Indian policy makers, including trying to change current role models to include more women who do not follow social norms. It advises laws be created and enforced to prevent sex selection of children. The report also encourages strengthening ownership and land rights, which should also address the agricultural productivity gender-gap.

400 Australian soldiers sent to Afghanistan

Sunday, August 20, 2006

400 Australian soldiers have been officially farewelled at parade in Darwin, NT, ahead of their deployment to Afghanistan on Tuesday. Wishing the soldiers well, Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says there is a high risk associated with the mission.

“We know that this is a dangerous mission but it’s also an extremely important one,” he said. “They will go beginning this week and be deployed over the next few weeks.”

The group will work around the southern Oruzgan Province. Rising violence in the Taliban heartland province earlier this month prompted Australian Prime Minister John Howard to further strengthen the capability of the Reconstruction Task Force (RTF). Approximately 150 personnel will be added to the 240-strong force announced in May.

Defence says the RTF will form part of the Netherlands-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in the Oruzgan province under NATO.

More than 1800 people have been killed in fighting in Afghanistan this year, 92 of them foreign soldiers (12 being Canadian). A contingent of 190 Australian special forces, supported by a 110-member helicopter detachment, has suffered a steady flow of casualties since September year, with 11 wounded — a rate of one a month. The Age reports the Howard Government has “kept secret” how soldiers suffered the wounds, or the extent or nature of the wounds.

Dr Nelson said the soldiers would perform command, construction, communications intelligence, protection and logistics support. “We must stick with our allies and stand up for our values,” he said. He told the troops they would be “dealing with people who are fanatically opposed to our way of life and everything we stand for”.

Dr Nelson says the Australian contribution will also include skills training for the local population to “ensure the benefits of the deployment continue long after our personnel have returned home.”

A Few Aspects Why It Makes Sense To Book Cleaning Services Camden}

Submitted by: Rosalie Wallace

If you’re looking at this, you most probably fit into one of these type of people. You’re married, have children, perhaps some pets, and have a house that is too much for you to clean on a regular basis. You work on a full time basis, so the mere thought of cleaning every day or on weekends makes you want to collapse in exhaustion. You try to get your family to help, however you know that’s a pointless attempt.

Would you like to hire Cleaning Services Camden, but you’re not sure if they are worth the cost? In the end, only the wealthy can have helpers, right? You’re wrong! On this page, we’ll explain to you 3 fantastic reasons why you need to use the services of a cleaning firm.

Cheaper than ever Cleaning Services Camden

It’s not only the wealthy that get to have domestic cleaning services. There are various experts out there who will work within your price range while delivering a fantastic service. There is no need to book someone to come out every day of the week. You can ask them to come once per week or even once a month if that is what you want. Even once a month will be a great relief for you.

Spend precious time doing what you like

One advantage of booking a cleaning agency is not having to worry about cleaning ever again. Just consider it: forget about dusting, no hoovering, no more toilet scrubbing… sounds like the life, right? Picture everything you can do when the burden of cleaning your property is on someone else. Get back to your activities, go out for a walk, spend some time with your family, take a nap, or go for a drive. Your daily life is going to be better when you do not have to fret about cleaning.

Return home to a clean house

Many people become irritated if they come home to a dirty house. It gives them anxiety, makes them feel as though they’re not really at home, or just causes them to feel bad. If someone else is doing the home tasks for you, guess what? You don’t have to think about it again! Rest easy knowing that you will come home from a really long day at the office to see your house spotlessly clean and all set for a celebration. Put your feet up and don’t think about the cleaning!

As you can see, there are a lot of great reasons why you need to get a residential cleaning service on your payroll. The best part is that it won’t even cost you too much. Even if you’re on the bottom step of the economy, you’re still able to pay for a cleaning service at least once a month. That means you have a huge head start when it comes to maintaining your house clean throughout the month. No more disputes with your spouse and kids to get them to help. That’s the meaning of home happiness.
