Ukrainian ship MV Faina with cargo of tanks freed by pirates

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Pirates in Somalia have released the MV Faina, a Ukrainian ship carrying a cargo of 33 T-72 tanks, along with 20 of its crew of 21, the Russian captain having been killed by hypertension during the hijack.

A ransom of US$3.2 million was paid for the ship’s release, compared to the $20 million previously demanded and also down from the initial request for $35 million after the capture in September. By January 16 the ransom sought was $5 million, with negotiations occurring directly between the pirates and the ship’s owner. In October the pirates threatened to blow the ship up unless this was paid within days, and stated they were willing to die and take the crew with them, but this threat was never carried out.

The ransom came in on Wednesday, and after counting the money the pirates left the vessel on Thursday. One pirate, Segule Ali, said of the payment that “no huge amount has been paid, but something to cover our expenses.”

No huge amount has been paid, but something to cover our expenses

The ownership of the cargo, which includes ammunition, rocket launchers, small arms and spare parts as well as tanks, is uncertain. Although the shipment was said to be for Kenya, as acknowledged by the Kenyan government, the pirates claim to have documents proving they were destined for Sudan, currently the subject of a United Nations arms embargo. Sudan denies this.

At one point, with the ship anchored off Harardhere, the pirates claimed they had put down an attempted revolt by the crew. However, the Faina’s owner has expressed doubts about the veracity of this report, which originated with the pirates themselves.

The remaining crew are reported to be healthy by the Ukrainian Presidency and the ship is now heading to Mombasa under US Navy escort. There are 17 Ukrainians, two Russians and a Latvian on board.

Outdoor Digital Advertising: The Digital Age S Advertising Platform

Submitted by: SMRT Media

In the 2002 film Minority Report starring Tom Cruise, the Internet will not be the only thing watching us and getting information from us. Television will also be able to customize itself based on what it knows about us. In that futuristic world of the year 2054, advertisements will also be appearing in the air around us and talking directly to us. But the film has gradually turning into our reality. Multi-touch interfaces, retina scanners, electronic paper, and facial recognition advertising billboards are now being developed. And with the amazing speed of progress in the development of these technologies, I don t think we would have to wait until the year 2054 to witness the film come to life. These days, it s even normal to see Digital Billboards on highways. Outdoor digital advertising will eventually replace traditional advertising and it s no surprise because these outdoor digital media tools allows advertisers to be highly efficient in their targeting which is getting the message in front of the audience that really matters and tailoring that message according to the consumer s profile.

Outdoor digital advertising is part of a brand new, on-demand experience that reaches consumers across multiple touch-points. Advertisements that might start on one medium get broadened by other mediums and then reach, using public screens, right into where people are gathering. It is expected that spending in Outdoor Digital Media will grow up to $3.7 billion by 2013 and 9.4% by 2014. Digital out of home advertising is being referred to the fourth screen of consumers and includes everything from elevator news readers to digital billboards to gas station video panels. It represents a fast-growing and Effective Advertising opportunity for marketers and outdoor advertising agencies. As with any new medium or technology, integrating outdoor digital advertising into broader marketing campaign is a must because it will provide better results and prove to be an Effective Advertising. The goal is to create an interactive experience that takes advantage of the link between other media and outdoor digital advertising by making use of new technologies.

Outdoor digital advertising indeed has a lot of advantages but it is still a new market that some advertisers might be unprepared to handle. Some advertising agencies are not fully comfortable with this brand new medium and thus hesitate in integrating. There is a need to explain the technological and financial potential of Digital Media advertising so that advertisers would be able to measure their return on investment more accurately. It is also important for advertisers to keep in mind that even though outdoor digital media is eye-catching, advertisements would still need to be more interactive in order to effectively engage consumers. The concern of advertisers and marketers are no longer about where else they can advertise to reach consumers but how they can use the medium to reach the consumers. Having a futuristic world like that in the movies would be really cool and amazing, just as long as privacy issues would not be violated.

US automakers GM and Chrysler seek more government aid

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

The United States auto manufacturer Chrysler, which has been badly affected by the ongoing recession, has asked the US government for an additional US$5 billion in aid on top of the four billion it has already received, saying that it plans to fire three thousand employees. At the end of last year, the auto maker had just over 54,000 employees, meaning that the layoffs will equal about six percent of its total workforce.

In addition, Chrysler will cut the Chrysler Aspen, PT Cruiser, and Durango from production.

Another automaker, General Motors (GM), announced that it seeks $16.6 billion in loans from the government, in addition to the $13.4 billion that it has already received. GM plans to lay off 47,000 employees and close five factories. GM says that it might need as much as $30 billion from the US Treasury Department, an increase over their previous estimate of $18 billion. The company has warned that it might run out of money by March if more aid was not given.

Rick Wagoner, GM’s chief executive, described the firm’s plan as “comprehensive, responsive, achievable, and flexible”. “We have a lot of work in front of us, but I am confident it will result in a profitable General Motors,” he said, adding that “today’s plan is significantly more aggressive because it has to be.” GM says that it could be profitable in two years’ time, and might be able to repay all its loans by 2017.

A third US car manufacturer, Ford Motor Company, has said that it can make it through this year without any government aid.

The US Treasury Department will review the car makers’ survival plans for several weeks before a decision is made on whether or not to extend the loans. That decision is due by the end of next month.

Several groups seek to purchase Saturn auto brand

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Penske Automotive Group, Inc., an Ohio based investment group and Telesto Ventures have indicated separately that they are interested in purchasing the Saturn auto brand from General Motors (GM).

According to The Wall Street Journal, NissanRenault is interested in purchasing Saturn. Bloomberg, however, indicated that Nissan-Renault may be a partner of Penske’s potential bid. If Penske acquired the brand, they would distribute Saturn vehicles and outsource the assembly.

GM revealed that the Saturn brand along with Saab and Hummer were up for sale when unveiling their restructuring plans to Congress for governmental loans. While the Pontiac brand was originally to be a niche brand, GM had changed their plans recently and decided to eliminate the brand.

Telesto Ventures is an investment group that includes private equity firm Black Oak Partners LLC of Oklahoma City and several Saturn dealerships. Initially, Telesto will purchase Saturn branded cars from GM then act as a general retailer for foreign brands. Telesto is in talks with several foreign manufacturers.

The Ohio group includes many former senior auto company managers plus private financial backers, chemists and engineers who live in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. This group plans to initially purchase cars from GM then purchase existing but closed plants due to automaker restructuring. Additionally, one of the partners indicated a willingness to accept some “legacy” cost in relation to the United Auto Workers. The Ohio group is also pursuing possible loans or other support from national and state governments.

GM is reviewing several offers for Saturn. GM has contracted with S.J. Girsky & Co. to advise them on the sale.

Chrysler files for bankruptcy, Fiat Group SpA to run company

Friday, May 1, 2009

The American auto company Chrysler filed for bankruptcy Thursday, however a deal with European auto maker Fiat went through. The emerging Chrysler will be owned 55 percent by the United Auto Workers, eight percent by the United States Government, two percent by the Canadian Government and Fiat would begin with a 20 percent share.

Chrysler Chief Executive Robert Nardelli will step down when the bankruptcy proceedings are finalized.

Initially, the Italian company, Fiat, will appoint three members on the emerging Chrysler’s new board, and the United States government will appoint six. Fiat can assume the majority of the ownership upon repayment of American loans.

Chrysler administrators expect that the bankruptcy should take a couple of months.

“We expect this to be a very short, 30-to-60-day bankruptcy process, during which the company will function normally,” a top administration official said, “People will be able to buy cars, they will have their warranties honored, and everything should go on normally.”

The bankruptcy filing indicated that Chrysler was in debt to 20 creditors to a tune of more than $10 million each.

Meanwhile, the deal with Fiat did go through, and Chrysler should have cars designed by Fiat out on the market by 2011.

“It’s a partnership that will give Chrysler a chance not only to survive, but to thrive in a global auto industry,” said American president Obama, “Fiat has demonstrated that it can build the clean, fuel-efficient cars that are the future of the industry.”

However, automotive analyst Erich Merkle has hesitations.

“History would show that alliances really don’t work that well,” Merkle said, “even though, no matter how good they may look on paper.”

The restructuring has been managed by Steve Rattner, a former investment banker, and the U.S. Government auto task force.

Obama has set three ultimatums before Fiat. Fiat should produce a 40 mile per gallon vehicle while managing the new Chrysler, transfer fuel efficient Fiat technology to Chrysler factories in the United States, and produce cars in Chrysler factories and distribute them in Europe.

Submitted by: William U. Steinmetz

Camping is such a fun activity for kids and for the parents too. However, it will be more fun and enjoyable when you have camping games on your list. You should remember to take into consideration the preferences of the kids to make this camping moment a truly memorable one. So to help you on your camping preparations, here are five fun and easy camp games that you might want to include on your list:

1. Ah! So! Gi! – All participants will sit in circle around bonfire perhaps. The group will learn three commands for this game.

Ah! – they will shout “Ah!” aloud and put their left or right hand across their forehead in a salute motion. They will then point to the person sitting next to them.

So! – they will shout “So!” aloud while putting their left or right hand across their chin in a salute motion. They will then point to the person next to them.

Gi! – they will shout “Gi!” while placing both their hands across their chest in a clapping motion. They will then point towards any person in circle.

The commands and corresponding actions shall be done in order. When someone is “Gi”ed by another person, he/she shall start the sequence from the top. The person who will fail to follow the correct order and action of each command will be booted out from the circle until only two participants left. Of course, the last one with no mistake will be the winner of the game.

2. Hot Seat – One person will be on the “hot seat” and will have a piece of paper on his forehead with a word written on it. He/she will ask various questions and the rest of the group will answer “yes”, “no” or “maybe” until he/she gets the correct answer. A timer is used in getting the correct answer. If the person did not get the right answer within the time allowed, then he/she has to perform a consequence.

3. Follow the Leader – There will be one leader and the rest of the kids will follow whatever this leader do or say. Participants who will fail to follow the exact words or actions of the leader will be out of the game. The last one standing shall be announced as the winner.

4. Bean bag toss game – Prepare some all-weather cornhole bags for exciting beanbag toss game for your camper kids. This game is fun and easy for the kids. They will just need to aim and toss the beanbag filled with feed corns at a raised platform with a hole at the end to be able to play the game.

5. Scavenger’s hunt – You can also organize a scavenger’s hunt activity for your kids. However, if you are going to camp on mountains or forest, you might want to make the game easier for them to avoid going in farther areas. Make sure that adults are also surrounding the place to look after the kids.

These are some examples of perfect games that will make your camping activity more fun and memorable. The kids and adults will surely have a great time playing these games.

County Donegal, Ireland crash kills one, injures two

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

A two-vehicle road traffic accident in County Donegal in Ireland has left one person dead and injured two others. The accident occurred when a camper van collided with an oncoming car on the N15 road between the towns of Ballybofey and Donegal at approximately 1540 BST (1440 UTC) on Monday.

The fatality was reportedly a man in his 70s from the town of Lifford; he has not yet been publicly identified. He was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The female passenger he was travelling in the car with, thought to be the wife of the man, was taken to the same hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The road where the crash occurred was closed to allow the Garda to investigate the incident.

Iraqi insurgents intercepted drone feeds using widely available software

Saturday, December 19, 2009

United States defense officials acknowledged that Iraqi insurgents successfully intercepted live video feeds from U.S. MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicles with widely available software. The story broke on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal with a defense official, anonymously, informing them it is an old problem, which has already been fixed.

The Journal says U.S. military personnel in Iraq discovered the problem late last year when they seized a Shi’ite militant’s laptop containing drone video feeds.

Senior defense and intelligence officials say insurgents were able to take advantage of an unprotected communications link in the systems of the remotely-piloted aircraft. The insurgents used software that is available online and costs about $26.

While U.S. defense officials say the issue has been fixed, the Journal quoted senior intelligence officials as saying it was not yet clear if the problem had been completely resolved.

It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.

U.S. officials say there is no evidence that militants had been able to take control of the drones. But the intercepted video feeds could show where the planes are operating.

The Journal also reported that U.S. drone feeds have also been intercepted in Afghanistan.

Officials say the U.S. government has known about a flaw in the drone communication system since the NATO intervention in Bosnia in the 1990s. At the time, the military assumed local adversaries would not know how to exploit it.

The report says fighters in Iraq used software programs such as one called “SkyGrabber” from the Russian company SkySoftware, which is designed to intercept data transmitted by satellite Internet.

The Journal quoted one of the program’s developers, Andrew Solonikov, as saying it was designed to download legal content — such as music and video — and that it was never intended to intercept military data. Solonikov said in a email to the paper, “It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.”

Livingstone brands Boris ‘a joke’ in London mayoral elections

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

On the final day of campaigning before the vote in the London mayoral election, incumbent Ken Livingstone attacked main rival Boris Johnson as “a joke”. He warned Londoners that they were not voting in a “Celebrity Mayor” contest.

Livingstone unveiled a campaign poster in West Ham that will also be printed on postcards and sent to one million Londoners. It reads: “Don’t vote for a joke. Vote for London.”

“It’s not an election for the host of Have I Got News For You or a celebrity mayor. It’s about who is best placed to run an £11bn budget every year,” Mayor Livingstone said, referring to the panel game show, for which Boris Johnson has been a guest host.

“Tomorrow you have a choice between new policies and fresh energy from a new mayor in City Hall or more of the same from a tired, out-of-date administration that is beset by allegations of sleaze,” responded Johnson in a mass e-mail to over 500,000 voters. “I am optimistic about London’s future and believe we can make London a greater place to live in.”

London will be voting for mayor tomorrow, May 1. Ken Livingstone is the candidate for The Labour Party and Boris Johnson is the candidate for the Conservative Party. There are a number of other candidates, but recent opinion polls have shown it to be a two-person race, with some polls predicting a victory for Livingstone and others Johnson.
