Democratic holdout agrees to support health care reform in US

Sunday, December 20, 2009

A conservative Democratic United States senator has agreed to supply the key 60th vote needed for passage of a sweeping health care reform package. Senate Democrats have reached a breakthrough in their struggle to pass sweeping heath care reform legislation, lining up the 60 votes needed to overcome fierce Republican opposition. Senators met Saturday in Washington, D.C. during a driving snowstorm in a frenzied effort to move forward on President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority.

The spotlight was on moderate Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who had been the last holdout as Senate Democrats raced against the clock and against determined Republican opposition to pass their health care bill by their self-imposed deadline of December 25th, Christmas.

Change is never easy, but change is what is necessary in America today and and that is why I intend to vote for cloture, I intend to vote for cloture and for health care reform.

Nelson said he is now ready to vote for cloture, which would advance the bill. “Change is never easy, but change is what is necessary in America today and and that is why I intend to vote for cloture, I intend to vote for cloture and for health care reform,” he said.

Nelson said he decided to support the bill after winning new concessions from Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to limit the availability of abortions in insurance sold under the new legislation along with millions of dollars in Medicaid funding for Nebraska.

The legislation would extend health benefits to more than 30 million uninsured Americans and impose new regulations on the health insurance industry.

Senator Reid of Nevada has been working for months to win over one holdout Democratic senator after another, repeatedly altering the bill to satisfy different demands. Reid says reform is essential. “The broken system cannot continue and it will not continue. When President Obama signs this bill into law, we will officially end the era in which insurance companies win only when patients lose,” he said.

The broken system cannot continue and it will not continue. When President Obama signs this bill into law, we will officially end the era in which insurance companies win only when patients lose.

Nelson’s support should pave the way for Senate Democrats to win the first of a series of crucial procedural votes scheduled to begin at one o’clock in the morning on Monday and set to conclude — if everything goes smoothly for them — with final passage on Christmas Eve.

Republicans have been using a number of parliamentary procedures to delay action on the bill, including forcing a reading on the Senate floor Saturday of Reid’s 338-pages of last minute amendments. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky responded to the apparent Democratic breakthrough. “And Democrats are forcing a vote on it, as I indicated, over the weekend, counting on the fact that the American people are preoccupied with Christmas and not paying much attention to what they are doing,” he said.

The history that is being made here, make no mistake about it, the history that is being made here, is the ignoring of the will of the American people.

Republicans are unified in their opposition, saying the bill is too expensive and will not solve the problems with the current health care system. Senator McConnell dismissed claims by Democrats that the bill is historic. “The history that is being made here, make no mistake about it, the history that is being made here, is the ignoring of the will of the American people,” he said.

Senator John McCain of Arizona echoed those comments in the weekly Republican radio address saying, “Regrettably, there’s nothing in this legislation that effectively addresses the problem of health care hyperinflation. In fact, experts tell us the Democrat legislation makes matters worse.”

Democrats say they have been trying to reform the nation’s health care system for close to 70 years, ever since President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in office. Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut was emotional as victory seemed within reach. “All we are trying to do is to guarantee that if you are a fellow citizen of ours, and you are struck with illness or a loved one is, that you will never again have that fear, that you will end up losing your home, your job, your retirement and your life savings because you have been afflicted with an illness through no fault of your own.”

If the Senate is able to pass a bill next week, it would be viewed as a major victory for President Obama. But the bill would still need to be reconciled with a health-care reform bill passed last month by the House of Representatives before the president could sign it into law next year.

150,000 street vendors in India shown how to avoid causing ‘Delhi belly’

Monday, April 25, 2005

The All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health has begun a campaign to instruct street vendors in India how to safely prepare food for their customers to avoid inflicting ‘Delhi belly’–severe diarrhea–which afflicts about half of the visitors to the region. Over 150,000 “stall wallahs” in Calcutta will be shown how to properly prepare dishes such as jhalmuri (a rice, tomato, and onion dish) and ghughni (a chick pea curry dish).

“Do not set up your stall in the middle of a rubbish dump, drain or sewage channel,” the report recommends. “Wash your hands before cooking and do not let large swarms of flies settle on food displays.”

“One of the tips we’ve been given is to wear aprons,” Banahari Saha, a stall operator on Camac Street, in Calcutta, told UPI. “We’ve also been told how important it is to make sure the water is clean and uncooked food is protected from flies,” he said.

The campaign is also sponsored by the World Health Organization. Tourists will be given maps pointing to street vendors who have been approved by the All India Institute.

“My customers say they’re happy with the changes I’ve introduced,” Saha told UPI.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

UAE launches national authority for scientific research

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its first national authority for scientific research (NASR) to coordinate and fund scientific research in the country.

The national authority for scientific research was announced on March 7 by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE minister for higher education and scientific research. NASR will begin with an annual budget of AED100 million (approximately US$27.2 million). The authority hopes to receive additional contributions from the public and the private sector.

NASR will look to fund research projects in various fields, including engineering, technology, medicine, water and agriculture, proposing specific projects to be competed for by researchers at universities and private research institutes.

“Projects are going to be selected to help promote scientific research and the growth of UAE society and we will compare them with international scientific research criteria,” Gulf News quoted Al Nahyan as saying at the launch.

NASR will also train scientists and develop programmes for promoting public science awareness. It will also coordinate with government authorities on the issue of intellectual property rights, by providing advice on how companies and research centres should go about protecting their discoveries in the form of patents or licenses. It will also provide scholarships for researchers in the UAE to work on international research programmes, and organise national scientific conferences. NASR forms part of the UAE’s strategic plan to improve higher education and scientific research.

Zakaria Maamar, associate professor at the College of Information Technology at Zayed University, UAE, told Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) that, “This initiative is another boost to the research and development activities that are carried out in the UAE. It will definitely provide researchers with the appropriate funds to sustain such activities and promote best practices in the community.”

Said Elnaffar, assistant professor at the college of information technology at the United Arab Emirates University, told SciDev.Net that, with this initiative, the UAE is taking the lead and setting a good example by building a strong development infrastructure founded on knowledge discovery and research.

Child Therapy Help! My Child Is Depressed

Submitted by: Gemma Bailey

In the world of child therapy it is now being recognised that more children are suffering from moderate mental health issues in the UK than ever before and the numbers are on the rise.

There may be a number of factors that are contributing to this. For example, children have access to far more resources, gadgets and gizmos than ever before. You would think that this rich living would increase happiness but many of these things cause them to compare what they haven t got against what others have. Every new gadget is quickly replaced by the manufacturers with a new and improved gadget. In these circumstances it s a challenge to ever feel fully satisfied.

Family dynamics have changed too compared to say 50 years ago. Life was very different then with children in larger families, able to play outside with a feeling of safety with everyone sitting and eating together later on.

For many children, there is an abundance of information available to them. Schools are making exams more difficult as pupils become brighter. As their world become more intellectual and academic, there is little time left to educate them on emotional intelligence or well being. Child therapy and the work that we do is now as crucial as ever.

Quite simply, some children are depressed because:

– They haven t been taught how to manage negative emotions and how to overcome them.

– They haven t been taught how to quickly access positive resourceful emotions

– They do not feel in control of their emotions because they are not taught about how to take responsibility for their thoughts and feelings.

One of the challenges with children who are depressed is that they may not have the language or communication skills to express their feelings. They may not have any concept of what depressed means. So the childs behaviour will be the biggest insight into what is going on for them internally.

If a child is overreacting to small problems, frequently tearful and sad, moody most of the time and/or complains of feeling unloved or feeling like an outsider in their home, then they could be suffering from depression.

Ensuring that children and young people (it s never too late, not even for teenagers!) get an opportunity to talk honestly about their feelings and are given reasonable time to discuss their worries is a great first step. By being listened to, they are also learning the skill to listen and to be respectful of others emotions.

Learning techniques such as those within NLP anchoring and positive beliefs can help with state management. Giving young people a facility to manage their emotions also begins to teach them unconsciously that they can chose their emotions instead of being at the mercy of them. It means they can begin to learn about taking responsibility too for the reactions towards others.

When this is done early on, communication can be much simpler. With teenagers, engagement in these activities can be a challenge especially for parents who are often the people that have the least amount of communication with their child. In this instance learning these valuable skills from role models such as a teacher, football coach or other respected figure in their life can be incredibly valuable.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

Tuesday, December 25, 2007

Last Tuesday in Taipei, Google Taiwan held an annual summary press conference named “Collective Intelligence & Innovation” (In Chinese: ?????????). With many products had already been presented to the public like wikis, blogs, and photo albums in the Web 2.0 era, Google served to provide lots of services like Google Apps, Google Maps and YouTube with suitable versions in Taiwan differing other countries this year.

Global Deputy Director of Google Kai-Fu Lee said: “The contents on the Internet were mostly limited with some copyright issue in the past, but after many products in the Web 2.0 era are presented, several contents are progressively released and opened to the public in the presence. As those factors, we [Google] hope developers in Taiwan can develop useful tools for local people to apply with people’s life.”

“In order to change minds in public, we [Google] conjoined some required elements into people’s life, and services on iGoogle in Taiwan are progressively more and newer because of the improvements of developers. We hoped a simple service can be multiplied with releases of useful and functional tools,” he also said.

Also in this conference, the Engineering Director of the Google Taiwan R&D Center Li-feng Chien also announced the achievements on the “Google Taipei Developers’ Day” and invited developers named Chi-pao Hu and Yi-ru Lin to share some actual applications on iGoogle.

Study: Herd animals detect Earth’s magnetic field

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Large herd animals may have the ability to detect earth’s magnetic field, concluded scientists in Germany in a report published in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences after performing studies of cattle and deer grazing and sleeping patterns. The animals tended to face north-south oriented toward the earth’s magnetic poles. Hynek Burda of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany led the team that announced the unconfirmed study. Burda and his team gathered cattle data via analysis of Google Earth images.

The team originally intended to test for possible human magnetic field detection by studying the orientation of sleeping bags in outdoor campers, but it proved difficult to obtain data because humans usually slept under tents. Cattle were easier to observe, and 8,510 head of cattle at 308 locations demonstrated a strong tendency to align body orientation in accordance with the earth’s magnetic field. Other possible factors such as wind or sunlight direction did not supply a better explanation for the behavior.

I think the really amazing thing is that hunters and herdsmen and farmers didn’t notice it.

To compare against a second large species, Burda and his team analyzed data on 2,974 deer studied through photography, direct observation, and snow imprints. The deer demonstrated a similar pattern. “I think the really amazing thing is that hunters and herdsmen and farmers didn’t notice it,” said Burda according to a National Public Radio report.

Other scientists found the results of the study intriguing. Peter August of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, commented: “I was really amazed at the consistency with which they found north-facing cows and deer. It was really intriguing.” No independent study has yet confirmed the Duisburg-Essen team’s findings.

This is the first study that indicates magnetic field detection in large mammals. Burda’s previous research involves naked mole rats, a small blind mammal species whose behavior indicates an internal magnetic compass. According to a report by Jeremy Hsu at MSNBC, “Previous research has shown that animals such as birds, turtles and salmon migrate using a sense of magnetic direction, and small mammals such as rodents and one bat species also have a magnetic compass.”

What Do Your Favorite Animals Reveal About You?}

Submitted by: Anderson Fox

Here is another fun personality test that I often use with people that can reveal a great deal about someone’s personality. I would encourage you to not only try this out for yourself, but this is a lot of fun to do with a small group of friends or relatives as well.

Before reading any further, however, I would like you to find a small sheet of paper and a pen to write down your answers as you go along. Dont bother trying to figure out what it all means at this point. Just relax and have fun with it!

The first thing I would like for you to do is to think of your favorite animal. This can be any kind of animal, from one that might be found inside your home, to one that lives deep in the jungles of Africa. Please dont overthink this, Just go with the first animal that pops into your mind and write it down.

Then I would like you to

quickly jot down three or four things that you like about this particular animal

. This could be something about the way it looks, the way it acts, or something else entirelyit doesnt matter. Just take a moment and write them down.

Now I would like you to do the same thing with

your second favorite animal

. First write down the type of animal it is, and then list three or more things that you like about this particular type of animal.

Finally, I would like for you to repeat this entire process one last time using

your third favorite animal

.

Please take a moment to complete your answers before continuing on to the explanation. Trust me, this particular exercise isnt going to be very fun or enlightening if you are simply reading through it.

Ready?Your Three Favorite Pets Explained:

This type of animal preference exercise has been used by therapists and researchers for years and is similar to several of the exercises that are in my

Mind Doodles

book. Simply by completing this simple personality quiz, you’ll be able to learn more about yourself and those around you.

Your Third Choice:

Lets start at the end by looking at your third favorite animal. What we are looking for here is not so much the name of the animal, but

the words you used to describe this particular animal

.

What words did you use here? Are they mostly positive (intelligent, strong, independent)? Or are these words more neutral sounding (loyal, cuddly, solitary)? Also if you have any negative sounding words here (loner, vicious, scavenger) -this would probably be considered a bit unusual because we are still talking about one of your favorite animals here.

The reason that we are looking at these words so closely here is that your third favorite animal is said to

represent the way in which we subconsciously see ourselves

. In other words, this animal is describing our self-image. Take a closer look and try to understand what message is being sent here?

Your First Choice:

Your first choice (or your favorite animal) is said to symbolically represent your ideal self. In other words

this is who you would like to become

. Go back and read through the words that you used to describe your favorite animal. How do these words compare to the words you used to describe your third choice? How are they alike and how are they different? What are the qualities of this animal that you admire the most but perhaps feel you have not yet achieved in your own life?

Your Second Choice:

Finally your second choice (or second favorite animal) is said to

represent the qualities that you are searching for in an ideal mate

. How do these qualities compare to the ones that you have written down for the other two animals?

Also, take a closer look at the specific words you chose to use here. Do these qualities seem active (powerful, intelligent, strong)? Or are they more passive (loyal, cuddly, beautiful)? This alone could tell you a lot about what you may be looking for in an ideal mate.

I hope that you have enjoyed this exercise! If you have found this to be informative or simply entertaining, I would encourage you to share it with someone else who you think might appreciate its unique message.

I wish you all the best.
